DGDC holds 17th Designers Meetup

Last November 26, Davao Graphic Designers Community (DGDC) held its 17th Designers Meetup at Norde International Distributors Davao Office.

Designers Meetup is a bimonthly gathering of local artists and designers. DGDC invited speakers to share their knowledge on their fields of expertise. A special segment of Designers Meetup, called Portfolio Talks, also allowed up-and-coming talents to showcase their works.

For this session, DGDC invited Resa Embutin of IngenuitySerge Tolones and Laurence Cueto of Norde International, and Alben Tan to be the speakers.

Resa talked about Ingenuity’s hot mobile game Tamagogo, which reaped recognition in the 2016 Game Developers Association of the Philippines (GDAP) International Mobile Gaming Awards for Best Art, Best Mobile/Handheld Game and Best Gameplay.

Serge and Laurence shared the latest developments in the field of printing, 3D printing and 3D scanning in Norde International’s product lineup through the affordable Lulzbot 3D printer line, the high-end Stratasys 3D printer line, and the Artec 3D scanner line.

Alben took the stage last to share his experiences as an artist making background art and splash art for big-name clients. He also did a live painting demo for the audience.

For the Portfolio Talks, the talents of James Bernabe, Neo Bryce Largo, Dustin Hyrel Lim, Ansoy Ming and Xiao Prieto shone through.

Meetup at Manga Toshokan Cafe

If you don’t happen to know where or what Manga Toshokan is, here’s the skinny: literally translates to “Comics Library” in Japanese, It’s a magical cafe in downtown Davao (Palma Gil St., DC in-front of The Royal Mandaya Hotel) featuring hundreds of Manga/ Comics, Artbooks, Graphic Novels, and etc. Browse and read popular Manga tittles while enjoying a cup of coffee and scrumptious treats.

mt1Last October 29, 2016, they held their first-ever mini meetup with local creative comics or manga enthusiasts in preparation for December 14’s BLTX DAVAO which the cafe will be hosting, among other things. With some 30+ attendees, the meetup was in full swing with each taking turns in introducing themselves and really just connecting with fellow Manga/Anime Lovers. It was a great precursor to a new community which will be coming up with some exciting news in the coming days.

A big thanks to cafe owner, Ms. Bernice Babista and Lorenzo ‘Enzo’ Cortes for accommodating us.

Here are some of the photos from last night’s meetup.  Sorry for the crappy quality of the pics :3

Busy people getting to know each other and creating great stuff! Nice to bump to Faye, Nikki, and Charlyn who showed us their works and animation reel.
Shoot! Your turn to introduce yourself!
Thanks to Enzo who led and organize the event.

Solid DU30

Text by Paolo Ramirez

du30-1With the election just in the corner amidst the propaganda, all the shady politicking and lack of Comelec stance, never did I see such reverence and support for the people’s president. Never did I see people themselves selflessly doing their part to campaign for their candidate. Never did I see hordes of people from different cities gathering in support for their bid – one, I might add that’s not coerced nor bribed. Never did I see such a machinery run by the people. creativechallenge2ad.jpgIt’s time for another round of our Creative Challenge! On this second challenge of the series we asked members to explore their inner Fridas and Rembrandts as they turn to themselves for inspiration. Self-Portraits are representation of artists that are drawn, painted, photographed, etc. which shows new depths as to who and what the artist is about just by reading between the brush strokes. Love in Art (PART ONE)

It’s February, the National Arts Month* and well, apparently for Love. Like it or not it’s the month of prevalent spoken sweet nothings, of lovers flaunting their better halves to the world, of singles being singled out, of doomed relationship reflections and whatnot… Here’s PART 1 of DGDC’s Valentine’s Feature starting with these typographic works from bittersweet quotes!
